For many job seekers, the Internet is an archive of embarrassment - a place where their drunken escapades, sexual misadventures and overwrought political ramblings are preserved for any potential boss who cares to type their name into a search engine.
To address that problem, a cottage industry of “online reputation management” companies has sprung up, with the companies promising to eliminate or bury Web pages that don’t show applicants at their finest, while burnishing applicants’ “Web-utations” by posting positive content.
